Major Decisions

So it has been a LONG time since I last posted so I have decided to just make this a bit of a catch-up post. So here goes...

I spend a lot of my time at work at Juniper Take-out. It is a fun place to work, the people are hilarious, but it is still work. Funny story of last night: I was carrying a pot of soup back to the kitchen to refill it. (There was only about an inch left in the bottom) When I was about to walk through the swinging metal doors, my co-worker Sierra walked out the other side. Her door hit the soup pot and knocked it out of my hands. Soup went EVERYWHERE right in front of a bunch of customers. We just stood there and laughed.

School is going pretty well... it would be going better if I applied myself more... :)

I also spend a lot of my time across the street at M-4 playing computer games with Ben (he was the one that took those awesome pictures on an earlier of my posts). We've.... gotten to be better friends. :) and he has gotten me to play this game called World of Warcraft. I'm not very good with computers, so a lot of time I just feel silly because he is great with them. But I'm learning the game. At first I didn't like it because he played it a lot and I wanted to do other things, but then I played and it was actually pretty fun. It's this big game that people play from all over the world. It's a big thing. Ben uses it to stay in touch with his friends from Grantsville.

I guess the biggest new turn that I have taken in my college life so far is my choice to change my major. Er... to actually decide on a major. I chose Social Work. I have just always had these crazy dreams to go help tons of people and just solve the world's problems. We'll see how that goes... but my ideal emphasis would be to work with adoption with teen moms. Every time I tell people what my major is, they say something about it being really sad or depressing, and that always sounds like they are discouraging me or something. I don't like it because I feel like I can handle it. I'm excited!

Also, I have been volunteering at two different elementary schools in Logan every week. I have only done it for two weeks now, but I have already been inspired. Both of the schools are Title 1 schools and both have a really high percentage of ESL kids. So lately I have been really inspired to learn Spanish. One, I just think it would be cool to be bilingual, and two, I think it would help me a ton in my career. Tonight I was tutoring at Adams elementary and I got to hear a little family speaking Spanish and I LOVED listening to it. I feel all pumped and determined.

Well, that is pretty much my life right now in a nutshell. I'll post some pictures later.

These are some pictures my good friend Ben Christensen took. He lives across the street from me and we talk all the time. We went and drove around Logan and took pictures yesterday for something to do. These were some of his favorites.

This is a guy who stands across from the TSC everyday and yells at us about how bad being LDS is. I walk past him on my way to institute. But the other day, two elders were standing there instead. It made my day. Obviously this picture has been edited a bit. He didn't take this yesterday, it just makes me laugh.

Me on some train tracks.

I really like this one...

My hair has a mind of its own.

Logan has sort of turned into my second home. I love it here! It is so much fun and I have met some really awesome people. Classes aren't too bad either. Weekends are still my favorite part of the week though. I'm excited to see what else happens us here. Bring on the fun!

Kickin' It With My Pals

These are just a few pictures I have taken during my time at Utah State so far

Shawn asked me to cut his hair... (I have never cut anyone's hair EVER)

But it turned out ok. (It isn't finished yet in this picture) Oh yeah, and we bribed him with a quarter from each of my rommmates ($1.25) to let us paint his nails.

Sheena cooking our first group meal (Spaghetti, Cantalope, Corn on the Cob, Juice and French Bread with Chocolate Pudding for dessert. We go all out!)

Amylee with the spread. (We stole the flowers from Sheena's room)

Home Home on The Range

Well, I did it, I survived my first day of being "independent"! Woo hoo! I woke up at the early hour of 7:00 am after a very long night of tossing and turning while I was severely missing my comfy bed at home. (this one just doesn't quite cut it for my sleeping needs) We all took mostly cold showers (or at least I did, but I was last in line), ate some breakfast and headed out the door to catch the shuttle. We got to the stop at 8:15. The bus was supposed to arrive (according to my roommate Richelle's sister) at 8:30. 8:40 came and we had seen two busses pass that weren't ours. We opted to walk. Turns out we were in the wrong place. But we had a good chance to get to know each other. Hooray for our first adventure as roommates!

I walked into a completely full Kent Concert Hall to attemt to find my professor Gary Straquadine. After searching for a bit, I found him. I went to get my name tag and our conversation went something like this:

"Heidi Eddington"

"You wouldn't happen to be related to Darrell Eddington would you?"

"He's my dad"

"I remember him from class years ago!"

Turns out, he remembered my dad, by name from when my 53-year-old father was a student at USU. So weird. But then my professor was a bit unique: he has run 67 marathons in the past 17 years, he buys 3 pairs of running shoes a year (one for every 500 miles), he uses words like "malleable" when describing what students are like (he also included the definition for the metalurgy term in his PowerPoint so we wouldn't get confused) when he teaches them, and described his Ph. D as the "highest achievement for the narrowest thinking. He was an intersting man to say the least, but for some reason he took a liking to me and learned my name really fast (when I turned in my assignment at the end of class, he didn't even have to look at me and make sure he knew my face). He talked to me a lot about my major and what I want to do with my life (I still have no clue). I thought it was rather strange.

At the beginning of our class, we played some random Jeopardy game, went to the computer lab to learn about the CIL test (which I passed in high school so I just sat there... "Straq" came and talked to me during that part because he had my name on a list saying I already did it.), built towers out of drinking straws and tape, talked some more, then got out. I walked "home" and called my parents on the way; it was nice to talk to them, it's silly how I can get homesick in one day, but I guess I have lived with them for 18 years so it's probably normal.

Then, Sheena, Amylee, and I walked up the the "hper" field to get some free food (strange looking hot dogs, but hey, they were free!), we sat on the hill and watched some kids playing stuff and joked about how we really had no desire to join a sorority (even after they offered us a tour), and just relaxed before we took our daily Wal-mart trip. I hate that place. I have taken a secret vow not to spend anymore money this week, we'll see how that goes.

I met a few friends today from my class: Emily, Brittany, Lauren and Joey. We randomly kind of formed a little group walking around campus. I ate lunch with Emily and avoided the huge circle of Box Elder kids (there are SO many up here URGH!). She is from Colorado and she is way fun. We have a lot in common. Hopefully we'll keep in touch.

Anyway, today has really been pretty fun. I'm excited for real classes to start next week so that I can get a routine going and meet more people.

Hope everything is well where you are!

Movin' on Out

Well, tonight is my last night here in dear old Perry. Tomorrow night I will pack up my belongings and head off to Utah State. I'm SO excited to start a new adventure and I'm a little bit nervous just for the unknown. I ordered a new compter which hasn't arrived yet, so it may be a bit before my next post.

A Pang Of Jealousy

Ok, so I have spent some tome looking at everyone's blog, and I can't help but notice how cute they all are. How do I go about designing my own?

And also, how do I get other people to show up on my blog. Apparently I'm not as tech savvy as I thought. Oops.

This Is A Test

So I really only joined this thing so that I could look at pictures of my adorable nephews on my sister Michelle's blog, but then I noticed some of my cousins on here, and decided it would be a good way to stay in touch with my sister while I'm away at school.

So, to whomever comes across my blog, welcome and bear with me, I'm new to this.

And yes, I did notice the fact that I'm the only one on here from my family who is not married with children. Hopefully I fit in.
